FELIX GRAY GLASSES: A STYLISH BLUE-LIGHT SOLUTION FOR THE REGULAR SCREEN-GAZER

By a show of hands, who enjoys staring at the ceaseless glare of screens all day? That is what I thought.

If you think about it, you probably spend the majority of your day looking at a screen. Whether that be on your laptop or computer for work, scrolling through your phone, watching TV, or reading e-books, it is almost unavoidable to stay in touch, keep up with work, and stay entertained. I definitely spend most of my week days with screens, designing new stationery, working with customers on custom orders, sending and receiving emails, watching TV with my hubby, or keeping up with the business social media platforms. Of course, there is so much more, but as you can see, a lot of my time is spent staring at the harsh light of a screen. 

For a short bit of time, you might not notice any symptoms. But I started realizing at the end of each day, that my head was always hurting and my eyes felt very tired. After a bit of research, I found out that blue light from our screens is actually much more harmful than I ever expected.

 The Ontario Association of Optometrists says:

The sun emits blue light, but so do our phones, desktop monitors, tablets and laptops. Blue light has several harmful effects. It can contribute to computer vision syndrome by reducing contrast and causing eye strain. It can alter our sleep pattern by suppressing our melatonin secretion, which makes us less tired and makes it harder for us to fall asleep. Lastly, blue light can damage the light sensitive cells at the back of our eye in our macula and increase the risk of developing macular degeneration later in life.

You have probably heard of countless companies that offer a solution, and you can buy many of them off the shelf at pharmacies. Most of these options look fairly inexpensive and have yellow tinted lenses. Some of these may work in reducing blue-light intake, but the aesthetics never appealed to me and the tinting of the lenses distorts color, which is not an option if you are editing photos or working with design, which I do on a regular basis.

When picking out my glasses, there were so many details and pictures on each different pair that I found exactly what I was looking for in no time. I chose the Faraday frame in black, which is a classic design that is half practicality and half style. When I went to check out, I saw that they offered free shipping, free returns, and free exchanges, which was an added perk. Now, these glasses are a little pricey (which makes sense because of the technology), starting at $95 per pair, but you can use your FSA or HSA cards to purchase them! I’d say that is a major perk. After all, it is affecting your overall health if you look at screens as much as I do. 

It only took a few days for my glasses to arrive in the mail, and they came beautifully packaged including the glasses, a glasses case, and a microfiber cleaning cloth for the lenses. At one point, I was traveling and I lost my case and microfiber cloth, so I reached out to Felix Gray’s customer service to see if I could buy them separately and they sent me another case and cloth for free! They are definitely focused on making your life easier and are the type of company that I like to support. 

THE EFFECTS OF THE GLASSES

I began wearing my glasses on a regular basis while looking at screens and quickly noticed a difference. It was as if I could actually feel my eyes relax when I put them on. They are very lightweight, so after a few days of wearing them, I didn’t even notice I had them on, and I got far fewer headaches toward the end of each day. I got compliment after compliment on the glasses and after hearing how much they helped my symptoms, my husband wanted a pair too. Now he doesn’t begin work without wearing his Nash blue-light glasses.
